Job Specification

NZQA wishes to appoint a National Assessment Leader: Mathematics and Statistics to join our Assessment and Moderation team on a three-year fixed term basis.  

The role undertaken by a National Assessment Leader is: 

  • to provide sector leadership by establishing and maintaining strong relationships with the national subject association, Advisory Services and the Ministry of Education
  • to provide sector wide support and advice with a view to enhancing the quality of assessment
  • to ensure consistency between subjects and schools
  • to increase the accuracy of assessor judgements
  • to monitor and report on patterns of achievement, internal and external.
  • to moderate and report on submissions against standards sent in by schools.


The skills we are also looking for include the ability to: 

  • develop systems and processes to analyse standards
  • manage the implementation, monitoring and review of internal assessment processes and systems for learning areas
  • provide advice and reports on assessment and the quality of internal assessment
  • coordinate and lead a learning area/subject
  • promote innovative approaches to assessment.


The successful applicant will have credibility in the subject area on a national level.

This is a career-enhancing opportunity, working with other NZQA personnel to ensure fair, valid and consistent assessment against national standards.   

You must understand the principles of standards-based assessment and have a working knowledge of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework and the NCEA.

You must also have recognised teaching and assessment expertise in your subject/s in New Zealand.

The role is based in NZQA's Wellington office. However, NZQA may consider other locations.
